Myopia

What is Myopia?

Service Image

Myopia or nearsightedness is another common eye disorder in which close objects are seen clearly but far objects look blurry. This occurs when the eyeball is slightly longer than average or when the cornea is excessively curved thus focusing light in front of the retina rather than directly onto it.Myopia usually develops during childhood & continues to advance until the early twenties. It may affect everyday activities like driving, watching television or identifying individuals at a distance. Fortunately, myopia can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses or newer treatments such as LASIK & other refractive surgeries.

Prevention & Precaution Tips for Myopia

  • Take regular breaks from screens (20-20-20 rule)
  • Encourage children to play outside more
  • Ensure there’s proper light while reading or working
  • Get regular eye check-ups for early detection
  • Wear corrective lenses as prescribed to avoid strain

Diagnosis & Treatment for Myopia

  • Eye test with visual acuity tests
  • Retinoscopy & refraction tests to check lens power
  • Contact lenses or glasses for sharp distance vision
  • LASIK, Contoura Vision or other refractive surgery for permanent correction
  • Orthokeratology (special contact lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea)
  • Regular checking to stop progression in children & young adults
