What is a Diabetic Retinopathy?

Service Image

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease resulting from damage to the blood vessels of the retina as a result of uncontrolled diabetes. With time, excess blood sugar levels weaken & leak into the vessels, affecting vision. Diabetic Retinopathy is among the main causes of avoidable blindness in adults. The disease tends to affect both eyes & can advance silently in its early stages, without any symptoms. Routine eye checks are important for individuals with diabetes. With early detection & treatment, such as laser eye treatment or injections, the progression can be slowed & vision loss prevented in many cases.

  • Fluorescein angiography to detect leaking blood vessels
  • Laser photocoagulation to close off abnormal vessels
  • Anti-VEGF injections to reduce swelling & prevent new vessel formation
