What is a Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis, often referred to as "pink eye," is inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane over the white part of the eye & the inner eyelids. It is caused by bacteria, viruses, allergens or irritating particles such as dust & smoke. Conjunctivitis is extremely contagious in cases that result from infections & may occur in one or both eyes. The condition results in redness, discharge & irritation. While most cases are mild & resolve with proper care, early diagnosis & treatment are necessary to avoid complications, bring comfort & avoid spreading the infection to others.
