What is a Macular Degeneration?

Service Image

Macular degeneration is an eye disease that affects the macula, the inner part of the retina that provides clear, detailed vision. It is most common in older people & can cause loss of central vision with normal peripheral vision. The disease can cause reading, driving & recognizing faces to be challenging. It has two forms: dry macular degeneration which develops slowly & wet macular degeneration which can result in sudden vision loss through abnormal vessel growth. Early diagnosis & good treatment are crucial to slow down progression & retain as much vision as possible.

Prevention & Precaution Tips for Macular Degeneration

  • Complete eye testing at regular intervals particularly after the age of 50
  • Do not smoke & avoid excessive alcohol
  • Eat a diet rich in greens, fruits & omega-3 fatty acids
  • Keep blood pressure under control & live a healthy lifestyle
  • Shield eyes from excessive exposure to UV
  • Early consultation in case vision changes or distortion appears

Diagnosis & Treatment for Macular Degeneration

  • Dilated eye test to assess macula status
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for retinal imaging in detail
  • Fluorescein angiography to detect abnormal blood vessels
  • Anti-VEGF injections to slow wet macular degeneration
  • Vitamin supplements for dry macular degeneration
  • Low vision devices & adaptive strategies to improve daily life
