Astigmatism

What is a Astigmatism?

Service Image

Astigmatism is a refractive disorder wherein the eye's cornea or lens has an irregular shape, leading to an uneven focus of light on the retina. This results in distorted or blurry vision at all distances. Individuals with astigmatism can also have eye fatigue, headaches or trouble seeing clearly when reading, using electronic devices or night driving. Astigmatism can co-exist with myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness) & can exist from birth or develop later. However, with proper correction by glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery, vision can be greatly improved & visual comfort restored.

Causes of Astigmatism

  • Irregular curvature of the cornea or lens
  • Genetic predisposition (runs in families)
  • Eye injury or surgery affecting corneal shape
  • Certain eye diseases like keratoconus
  • Developmental changes during childhood or adulthood

Prevention & Precaution Tips for Astigmatism

  • Regular eye check-ups for early detection
  • Corrective glasses or contact lenses as prescribed
  • Avoid prolonged eye strain from screens & poor lighting
  • Use proper lighting while reading or working
  • Protect eyes from injuries with safety goggles
  • Encourage children to spend time outdoors to reduce eye strain

Diagnosis & Treatment for Astigmatism

  • Comprehensive eye examination with visual acuity & refraction tests
  • Keratometry to measure corneal curvature
  • Clear vision with prescription glasses or toric contact lenses
  • LASIK, PRK or other refractive procedures for permanent correction
  • Corneal monitoring in progressive conditions such as keratoconus
  • Regular follow-up visits for stable vision & updated prescriptions
