Hyperopia

What is a Hyperopia?

Service Image

Hyperopia or farsightedness, is a refractive disorder in which distant objects are seen more clearly than near objects. This occurs when the eyeball is short or the cornea has insufficient curvature & thus light focuses behind the retina rather than directly on it. People with Hyperopia have difficulty reading, writing or working with electronic devices for long hours. It affects people of any age but is commonly detected during childhood or adulthood as the eyes become inflexible. Fortunately, hyperopia can be treated with glasses, contact lenses or newer refractive surgeries such as LASIK.

Causes of Hyperopia

  • Eyeball length shorter than normal
  • Cornea with less-than-average curvature
  • Genetic factor (runs in families)
  • Age-related shift in eye lens flexibility
  • Underlying eye health conditions in rare cases

Prevention & Precaution Tips for Hyperopia

  • Regular eye check-ups to identify early signs
  • Proper posture & lighting during reading or work
  • Limit prolonged screen time & take regular breaks
  • Have a nutritious diet for effective eye functioning
  • Wear corrective glasses or lenses as prescribed to prevent strain

Diagnosis & Treatment for Hyperopia

  • Detailed eye examination with visual acuity test
  • Assessment of refraction to determine the correct lens power
  • Prescription glasses or contact lenses to focus light appropriately
  • Advanced laser surgery such as LASIK or SMILE for permanent correction
  • Severe cases may have lens implant surgeries as a suggestion
  • Regular follow-up to avoid worsening of symptoms
